Internships - for the 21st century

"Inookshook" a very old name for a very new opportunity.

Internships

As a 2nd year university student, the words I hear the most are “internship”, “work experience” and “placements”. Lecturers and tutors don’t miss any opportunity to instill how important having some actual experience is before graduating and being thrown into the real world of job seeking.

Obviously internships dramatically improve your chances of getting hired post-graduation but if you’re taking a fairly practical degree they can also be a qualifying requirement for your final year.

However finding any "placement" can be difficult and the earlier you start looking the better.

To avoid last minute panic I started searching at the very beginning of my 2nd year but in the end it was pure luck that i was able to find what i was looking for. When researching I happened to come across the ZakBak website. Designed by Students for Students ZakBak directed me to InookShook a new website aimed solely at bringing Students and Employers together to work on "Real Projects".

I simply had to register and start searching. To be honest there wasn't a lot of choice but i found out later that was because the site was still in its development phase and i had stumbled across something special.

Inookshook is well thought out and simple to register and use, which is key, but it is also FREE.

Top tip: It is important to spend some time completing your profile before applying for any Internships because when you click apply the Employer is then able to view your profile. If you only do half a job on your profile you're not going to be offered the Internship are you! I received a positive response from a couple of the listings I applied for, and decided to accept the role of Social Media & Communication Assistant with DotComUnity.

I love it. it's local but i can still work remotely. I primarily work on the visual content and campaigns online. I direct and shoot interviews and short promotional videos as well as designing artwork such as flyers and brochures. It has really helped me develop my knowledge, skills, confidence and my work  is getting used and has real value for the business.

Inookshook went live at the end of July 2017.
